Medication and road safety: a scoping study

Driving a motor vehicle is a complex perceptual-motor task that requires competence in a large number of mental processes for safe operation. Some medications may influence the skills and processes required for safe driving, both positively and negatively, and this impact may differ among drivers. The aim of this project was to scope the influence of medication on road safety, with a focus on four key areas: the scale and extent of the issue in terms of how many people are actually driving under the influence of potentially-impairing medications; the impairing effects of different medications; individuals' understanding of their impairment; and whether people taking medication alter their driving behaviour.
