RELIABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY PROVISIONS FOR A RAPID TRANSIT INTERURBAN SYSTEM - SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT
THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT (BART), PRESENTLY BEING CONSTRUCTED, WILL BE A RAIL NETWORK WITH TRAINS OPERATING UNDER AUTOMATIC CONTROL AT SPEEDS UP TO 80 MPH AND MINIMUM HEADWAYS OF 90 SECONDS. DURING THE PERIOD OF DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE COMPLEX CONTROL AND COMMUNICATION EQUIPMENT ALONG RIGHT OF WAY AND ON THE TRAINS, THE PERFORMANCE RELIABILITY IN CONCERT WITH SAFETY WAS CONSIDERED PARAMOUNT. THE CONSIDERATIONS BEHIND THE RELIABILITY AND MAINTAINABILITY SPECIFICATIONS THAT WERE ESTABLISHED ARE DESCRIBED. /UITP/
