THE APPLICATION OF ELECTRONICS TECHNOLOGY TO THE BAY AREA RAPID TRANSIT DISTRICT SYSTEM

BART WAS CONCEIVED AND DESIGNED TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SYSTEMS APPROACH TO TRANSPORTATION IN A METROPOLITAN AREA. THE APPROACH EMBRACED NOT ONLY SERVICE GOALS, SUCH AS PROVIDING INTERFACES WITH AUTOMOTIVE TRANSPORTATION, BUT ALSO NEW TECHNOLOGY. A CONSIDERABLE AMOUNT OF LITERATURE HAS BEEN GENERATED BY DESCRIPTIONS OF THE SEPARATE INNOVATIONS AND APPLICATIONS, BUT TO DATE NO SINGLE PAPER EXISTS THAT ATTEMPTS TO DESCRIBE BRIEFLY ALL OF THEM AND TO RELATE THEM TO SUBSYSTEMS. IT IS THE INTENT OF THE PRESENT PUBLICATION TO FILL THIS GAP. THE FOUR SUBSYSTEMS CONSIDERED ARE DATA ACQUISITION, AUTOMATIC TRAIN CONTROL, PROPULSION, AND SELF-SERVICE FARE COLLECTION. WHILE THE PRIMARY EMPHASIS IS ON ELECTRONICS, IT IS NOTED THAT A VARIETY OF MECHANICAL INNOVATION, PARTICULARLY IN THE AREA OF ELECTROMECHANICAL LINKAGE, WAS REQUIRED.
