DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR EVALUATING ROAD SIGNS

A COOPERATIVE PROJECT BETWEEN THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS AND THE SYSTEMS RESEARCH GROUP OF THE DEPARTMENT OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING OF THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY HAD AS ITS PRIMARY OBJECTIVE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF A METHODOLOGY FOR USE IN THE EVALUATION OF SYSTEMS FOR DISPLAYING ROAD SIGN INFORMATION TO DRIVERS. THE RESEARCH THAT WAS PERFORMED TO REALIZE THIS OBJECTIVE WA DIVIDED INTO THREE PHASES. THESE PHASES INCLUDED: (1) THE DEVELOPMENT OF ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES TO RELATE SIGN CHARACTERISTICS TO DRIVING PERFORMANCE; (2) TESTING OF ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED IN PHASE 1; AND (3) ASSESSMENT OF SIGN ONGOING CHANGES MADE BY THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAYS USING TECHNIQUES DEVELOPED IN PHASES 1 AND 2. THE METHODOLOGY DEVELOPED BY THIS STUDY SHOULD MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO EVALUATE CHANBERS OF INTERSTATE AND FREEWAY SIGNING. /AUTHOR/
