A workforce strategy for freight drivers
A Workforce Strategy for Road Freight Drivers aims to outline the extent and nature of the challenges associated with driver recruitment, retention and skills training and examines how industry and government might collaboratively address driver shortages, better target available assistance and improve the skills and image of the professional driver workforce. Proposed actions for government and possible challenges or opportunities for industry are identified after relevant discussion in each of the four sections of the strategy. References to industry includes the potential involvement of individual companies, industry associations and unions. In developing this strategy, the Department of Transport has consulted widely and published a companion document entitled Background Paper: Towards a Workforce Strategy for Freight Drivers. That document offers a more detailed analysis of labour and skill shortages in the road freight sector used to inform this strategy, including raising some broader issues for debate and outlining the important role the transport and logistics industry plays in the Victorian economy.
