STATE OF THE ART RELATED TO REAL-TIME TRAFFIC INFORMATION FOR URBAN FREEWAYS

AN EXAMINATION OF THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE WAS CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE METHODS OF PROVIDING THE URBAN FREEWAY DRIVER WITH REALTIME TRAFFIC INFORMATION. BECAUSE VISUAL AND AUDIO METHODS OF COMMUNICATION WERE CONSIDERED MOST FEASIBLE FOR IMPLEMENTATION, THE STATE OF THE ART WAS FOCUSED ON SYSTEMS REQUIRING THESE TWO METHODS. A COMPREHENSIVE REVIEW IS MADE OF EXISTING AND PROPOSED SYSTEMS WHICH ARE CAPABLE OF COMMUNICATING WITH THE DRIVER WHILE HE IS IN HIS VEHICLE. THE SYSTEMS WERE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO WHETHER THEY DISPLAYED OR PROVIDED INFORMATION TO THE DRIVER EXTERNAL TO THE VEHICLE (EXTERNAL SYSTEM) OR WITHIN THE VEHICLE (ON-BOARD SYSTEM). /AUTHOR/
