Highway runoff treatment systems: evaluating their efficiency
Highway runoff can be an important source of pollution, if no treatment is undertaken. This paper evaluates different treatment systems in Switzerland and surrounding European countries for road surface runoff. Indicators were chosen permitting a comparison of the treatment efficiency of settling ponds, grass swales, oil separators and different types of technical treatment plants. The analysis is based on a literature review as well as different monitoring programs of treatment facilities in Switzerland. The optimal solution depends on a number of parameters, the most important ones being the characteristics of the runoff, the quality of the receiving waters and underground, topography, land availability and climate.
