APPLICATION OF COMMERCIAL RADIO TO FREEWAY COMMINICATIONS- A STUDY OF DRIVER ATTITUDES

FREEWAY CONTROL SYSTEMS CAN NOW PREVENT A BREAKDOWN UNDER "NORMAL" CONDITIONS. HOWEVER, ADEQUATE CONTROL OF DEMAND UNDER "ABNORMAL" CONDITIONS, SUCH AS ACCIDENTS OR LANE BLOCKAGES, IS NOT POSSIBLE. REAL-TIME DRIVER COMMUNICATIONS IS THEREFORE NECESSARY TO INCREASE SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY. ONE METHOD OF TRANSMITTING INFORMATION TO THE DRIVER IS THROUGH THE USE OF COMMERCIAL RADIO. THIS STUDY DISCUSSES THE RESULTS OF A QUESTIONNAIRE SURVEY DIRECTED TOWARD THE EVALUATION OF COMMERCIAL RADIO FOR REAL-TIME FREEWAY COMMUNICATIONS. THE CONCLUSION IS REACHED THAT COMMERCIAL RADIO COULD PLAY A VITAL ROLE AS PART OF AN EFFECTIVE REALTIME TRAFFIC INFORMATION SYSTEM FOR URBAN FREEWAYS. /AUTHOR/
