HIGHWAY CODING FOR ROUTE DESIGNATION AND POSITION DESCRIPTION

A SYSTEM FOR CODING EACH OF THE SEVERAL MILLION ROAD INTERSECTIONS IN THE COUNTRY HAS BEEN DEVELOPED. IT HAS BEEN OPTIMIZED FROM SEVERAL POINTS OF VIEW, ESPECIALLY COSTS OF IMPLEMENTATION AND EASE OF USE BY THE MOTORING PUBLIC. IN ADDITION TO FINDING A SUITABLE ALGORITHM FOR CODING INTERSECTIONS A PROGRAM HAS BEEN DEVELOPED FOR FINDING THE MINIMUM DISTANCE BETWEEN ANY TWO SUCH INTERSECTIONS, AND AT ANY GIVEN INTERSECTION TO INDICATE WHICH EXIT TO TAKE IN ORDER TO BE ON THAT MINIMUM PATH. DISTANCE MAY BE DEFINED AS MILES OR ANY OTHER ATTRIBUTE OF THE PATH BETWEEN TWO INTERSECTIONS. IT IS INVISIONED THAT EVENTUALLY IN EACH CAR WOULD BE EQUIPMENT FOR REQUESTING, AT EACH INTERSECTION, THE PROPER ROAD TO TAKE IN ORDER TO ACHIEVE THE MINIMUM PATH TO THE DESTINATION. THE ROUTES CHOSEN ARE NOT OPTIMAL IN AN ABSOLUTE SENSE BUT ARE CLOSE ENOUGH THERETO IN VIEW OF THE EXTRA COMPUTATIONS THAT WOULD BE REQUIRED TO GIVE OPTIMAL ROUTING. VOLUME II IS A CROSS-REFERENCED INTERSECTION DIRECTORY FOR ABOUT 7,000 PRIMARY INTERSECTIONS IN THE U.S. /BPR/
