A HIGH CAPACITY MOBILE RADIOTELEPHONE SYSTEM MODEL USING A COORDINATED SMALL-ZONE APPROACH
THE PRIME MECHANISM FOR SERVING LARGE SUBSCRIBER GROUPS WITH LIMITED SPECTRUM IS THE USE OF SMALL RADIO COVERAGE ZONES. WHERE THE AREA COVERED FROM A SINGLE BASE STATION IS SMALL, IT IS POSSIBLE TO REUSE THE RADIO CHANNELS OF THAT BASE SEVERAL TIMES IN THE SAME REGION. THE ESSENTIAL PROPERTIES OF SMALL-ZONE SYSTEMS ARE GENERALIZED IN THIS PAPER TO SHOW THAT ZONE SIZE ALONE IS NOT AN ADEQUATE PARAMETER TO DISTINGUISH "LARGE-" FROM "SMALL-ZONE" SYSTEMS. THE PARAMETERS OF A LARGE-SCALE, HIGHLY COORDINATED MOBILE TELEPHONE SYSTEM ARE DEVELOPED. SYSTEM SIZE AND FREQUENCY SPECTRUM ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT. A MODEL IS PRESENTED FOR A HIGH-CAPACITY SMALL-ZONE SYSTEM. IT USES SEVERAL ZONE SIZES. THIS STUDY ILLUSTRATES THE SPECTRUM EFFICIENCY AND FLEXIBLE GROWTH OF HIGH-CAPACITY MOBILE SYSTEMS WHEN THEY USE THE SMALL-ZONE CONCEPT. MANY TECHNICAL PROBLEMS MUST BE SOLVED BEFORE SUCH A SYSTEM CAN BEAR FRUIT. THE PROMISES OF SUCH A SYSTEM BESIDES SPECTRUM EFFICIENCY AND FLEXIBLE GROWTH ARE (1) LOW-COST TRANSMITTERS OF ONLY A FEW WATTS, (2) REDUCTIONS IN LAND RECEIVERS AND LOOP PER VOICE-PATH, (3) EASED REQUIREMENTS ON RECEIVER SELECTIVITY AND DYNAMIC RANGE, (4) EASED REQUIREMENT ON TRANSMITTER INTERMODULATION AND COMBINING, (5) THE POTENTIAL USE OF COMMON EQUIPMENT AT MOBILE AND BASE. THESE ADVANTAGES PROMISE A SYSTEM WHICH WILL GIVE MORE PEOPLE BETTER SERVICE AT LOWER COST AND USE FAR LESS SPECTRUM SPACE PER CUSTOMER THAN CURRENT SYSTEMS DO. /AUTHOR/
