THE HANDLING AND STABILITY OF MOTOR VEHICLES. PART 5, THE EFFECT OF ROLL STIFFNESS AND TIRE TYPE ON VEHICLE STEADY STATE RESPONSE

ROLL STIFFNESS AND TIRE TYPE ARE TWO IMPORTANT FACTORS IN THE RESPONSE OF AN AUTOMOBILE TO LATERAL DISTURBANCES. ROLL STIFFNESS WAS CONTROLLED IN THE FRONT BY 0, 1 OR 2 SWAY BARS AND IN THE REAR BY 0 OR 1 SWAY BARS. THE INFLUENCE OF THE TIRES WAS DETERMINED BY PRESSURE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FRONT AND REAR AND BY SWITCHING FROM RADIAL TO CROSS-PLY TIRES. ONLY STEADY-STATE RESULTS WERE ANALYZED, THE TRANSIENT RESPONSES BEING TOO COMPLICATED. DIFFERENCES IN VEHICLE STEADY-STATE HANDLING CAN BE QUANTITATIVELY MEASURED BY METHODS USED IN THIS REPORT. VEHICLE MOTION IS A COMPLEX FUNCTION OF HANDWHEEL ANGLE AND FORWARD SPEED. THE DISTRIBUTION OF ROLL STIFFNESS IS AN IMPORTANT VEHICLE DESIGN PARAMETER. TIRE CHANGES ARE MUCH LESS IMPORTANT THAN ROLL BEHAVIOR. /BPR/
