AN EVALUATION OF THE IOWA "NO PASSING ZONE" SIGN
A REVIEW IS PRESENTED OF STUDIES CONDUCTED IN IOWA, INDIANA, AND MICHIGAN ON NO-PASSING-ZONE SIGNS. THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE IOWA SIGN BY MEASURING ITS EFFECT ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR AND ITS EFFECT ON ACCIDENTS AS RELATED TO TRAFFIC VOLUMES. BEFORE AND AFTER STUDIES ARE CONDUCTED TO MEASURE THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE INSTALLATION OF A NO-PASSING ZONE SIGN ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD, OPPOSITE A STANDARD DO-NOT-PASS SIGN. DRIVER INTERVIEW STUDIES CONDUCTED IN IOWA AND MICHIGAN REVEAL CONCLUSIVELY THAT MOTORISTS FAVOR THE USE OF THIS SIGN. NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND IN THE MOTORISTS' PASSING MANEUVERS BEFORE AND AFTER THE INSTALLATION OF THE NO- PASSING-ZONE SIGN. HOWEVER, IT WAS FOUND THAT THERE ARE SIGNIFICANTLY FEWER ABORTED PASS ATTEMPTS AFTER THE INSTALLATION THAN BEFORE. THIS SIGN IS CONCLUDED TO BE BENEFICIAL TO THE MOTORING PUBLIC, SINCE ITS USE DOES NOT INDUCE ANY DETRIMENTAL CHANGES IN PASSING MANEUVERS AND IT SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCES THE PRESENCE OF ERRATIC BEHAVIOR. IT IS ALSO RECOMMENDED THAT FURTHER RESEARCH BE CONDUCTED ON THE USE OF THIS SIGN, SINCE IT BECAME OBVIOUS THAT THE ADVANCE WARNING ASPECTS OF THIS SIGN WERE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAFER DRIVING BEHAVIOR OF MOTORISTS. /AUTHOR/
