THE EFFECT OF EDGEMARKING ON VEHICLE PLACEMENT

THE EFFECTS VARIOUS TYPES OF EDGEMARKING HAVE ON THE LATERAL PLACEMENT OF VEHICLES ON A TYPICAL STRAIGHT SECTION OF RURAL HIGHWAY OF NOMINAL SEAL WIDTH 22 FT. WERE EXAMINED. FOUR DIFFERENT TYPES OF EDGEMARKING WERE TESTED AT TWO SITES BUT NO PARTICULAR EDGEMARKING PRODUCED AN EFFECT DIFFERENT THAN THE NO EDGEMARKING CONDITION. HOWEVER, THERE WAS A SIGNIFICANT SHIFT OF PASSENGER CARS TOWARDS THE CENTERLINE OF THE ROAD AT NIGHT COMPARED TO DAY IRRESPECTIVE OF EDGEMARKING, AND THAT THERE WERE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE LATERAL PLACEMENT OF PASSENGER CARS AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES. /RRL(A)/
