REPORT OF THE COMMITTEE ON HIGHWAY-RAILWAY GRADE CROSSING-SAFETY PROGRAM
THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE PROBLEM OF RAILWAY CROSSING ACCIDENTS, GOES INTO THE LEGISLATIVE ASPECTS AND ENFORCEMENT PROBLEMS, AND GIVES A RESUME OF WORK CURRENTLY BEING DONE IN THE HOPE OF REDUCING THESE ACCIDENTS. IT RECOMMENDS AN INTENSIVE PUBLIC EDUCATION CAMPAIGN INVOLVING THE 2 MAJOR RAILWAYS, THE CANADIAN HIGHWAY SAFETY COUNCIL, THE MASS MEDIA, AND OTHER INTERESTED ORGANISATIONS. INCLUDED IN THE APPENDICES ARE TABLES DEALING WITH STATISTICS ON HIGHWAY-RAILWAY GRADE CROSSING PROBLEMS, A SUMMARY OF FEDERAL LEGISLATION AND REGULATIONS GOVERNING THESE CROSSINGS, A SUMMARY OF PREVENTION LAWS DEALING WITH HIGHWAY-RAILWAY INTERSECTIONS, AND THE TEXT OF THE COMMITTEE RESOLUTION APPROVED BY THE CANADIAN HIGHWAY SAFETY COUNCIL. /RATAOC/RRL/
