NEW METHODS FOR THE CONTROL AND REGULATION OF BUSES

EQUIPMENT ENABLING BUSES TO BE AUTOMATICALLY TRACKED BY A COMPUTER THROUGHOUT THEIR ROUTES IS DESCRIBED. AN ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF HOW AN ON-LINE COMPUTER MAY BE USED TO DETECT THOSE IRREGULARITIES OF OPERATION FALLING INTO THE CLASS REQUIRING ACTION BY A CONTROLLER. CONTROL IS EXERTED FROM A CENTRAL POINT VIA RADIO TELEPHONE LINKS WITH BUSES. VARIOUS CONTROL STRATEGIES ARE DISCUSSED TOGETHER WITH THE BENEFITS OF OPERATING A BUS SYSTEM UNDER THIS TYPE OF CENTRALISED CONTROL. A DETAILED ACCOUNT IS GIVEN OF A BUS OPERATING SYSTEM, AIMED AT MORE ECONOMIC UTILIZATION OF VEHICLES, IN WHICH BUSES ARE ONLY ROUTE PLAYING DURING THE RUSH HOURS AND REVERT TO DIAL-A-BUS OPERATION AT OTHER TIMES. /RRL/
