MEASURES TAKEN BY TRANSPORT UNDERTAKINGS TO COMBAT THE EVIL OF TRAFFIC CONGESTION
BECAUSE PRIVATE CARS ARE CONGESTING ROADS, THE QUALITY OF MASS TRANSPORTATION SYSTEMS IS DETERIORATING. THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP TOWARD MAKING PUBLIC TRANSPORT MORE ATTRACTIVE IS TO RESTORE PUNCTUALITY AND REGULARITY OF SERVICE. THE RELIABILITY OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT IS THE DECISIVE FACTOR IN AN INDIVIDUAL'S CHOICE BETWEEN PRIVATE OR PUBLIC TRANSPORT. ROAD IMPROVEMENT SCHEMES TO HELP TRAFFIC FLOW ARE NOT ALWAYS POSSIBLE IN HIGHLY CONGESTED AREAS. THUS TRANSPORT AGENCIES ARE DEVELOPING INTERNAL COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS WITH SOME FORM OF A CENTRAL CONTROL ROOM OR TRAFFIC REGULATING POST FROM WHICH ORDERS CAN BE ISSUED TO KEEP THE SERVICES MOVING. THE PRESENT STATE-OF-THE-ART IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS OFFERS A NUMBER OF POSSIBILITIES, AND RESEARCH CONTINUES IN THESE AREAS.
