A STUDY OF TRAFFIC FLOW AT ARTERIAL STREET INTERSECTIONS
AN ATTEMPT WAS MADE TO OBTAIN A MORE PRECISE MEASURE OF THE EFFECTS OF LEFT TURNS AND COMMERCIAL VEHICLES ON TRAFFIC FLOW AT ARTERIAL STREET INTERSECTIONS. THE FIELD STUDIES WERE PERFORMED DURING PEAK HOURS AT SELECTED INTERSECTIONS, EACH APPROACH DIFFERING FROM THE PREVIOUS ONE BY ONLY ONE SIGNIFICANT FACTOR. THE VARIATION IN AVERAGE HEADWAY OR DISCHARGE VOLUME AS THE PERCENTAGE OF LEFT TURNS VARIES THROUGHOUT AN HOUR & FROM ONE APPROACH TO ANOTHER INDICATES THAT TRAFFIC FLOW DATA SHOULD BE ANALYZED FROM SHORTER PERIODS THAN AN HOUR IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE AMOUNT AND CAUSE OF CONGESTION. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAPACITY AND THE PERCENTAGE OF LEFT TURNS APPEARS TO BE NON-LINEAR BUT SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED FURTHER BEFORE DEFINITE CONCLUSIONS ARE DRAWN.
