A SOLUTION TO JOG INTERSECTIONS

THE CONGESTION OF A JOG INTERSECTION CAN BE ALLIEVATED BY WIDENING THE PORTION OF COMMON TRAVEL AND/OR INTERSECTION TREATMENT, OR BY INSTALLING A DIAGONAL CUTOFF TO TAKE THE THRU VOLUME FROM THE T STREETS COMING INTO THE INTERSECTION OFF THE COMMON LINK. IF THE DIAGONAL IS TO BE CONSTRUCTED, AN ANALYSIS SHOULD BE MADE TO SEE AT WHAT ANGLE IT SHOULD BE BUILT TO GIVE AN OPTIMUM SOLUTION. FOUR CASES WERE INVESTIGATED' THE TOTAL PURCHASE OF DIAGONAL CUTOFF TRIANGLE, THE PURCHASE OF THE DIAGONAL WIDTH, THE INCLUSION OF THE COMMONLY TRAVELED LINK, AND THE EXCLUSION OF THE COMMONLY TRAVELED LINK. TRAVEL DISTANCE SAVINGS, ANNUAL CAPITALIZED CONSTRUCTION COSTS, MAINTENANCE COSTS WERE FORMULATED IN TERMS OF THE ANGLE. BY THE PROPER COMBINATION OF EQUATIONS EXPRESSING THIS INFORMATION, THE CRITERION STATEMENT OF MAXIMIZING THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANNUAL SAVINGS AND ANNUAL COSTS CAN BE FORMULATED. THE ARC COSINE OF THE OPTIMUM ANGLE FOR THE VARIOUS CASES WAS COMPUTED. THE ARC COSINE AND THE QUANTIFIED SAVINGS COSTS WERE USED TO COMPUTE THE ANGLE WHICH WOULD GIVE THE MAXIMUM DIFFERENCE OF SAVING AND COSTS FOR EACH CASE. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SAVING AND THE COSTS AND THE RATE OF RETURN ON THE INVESTMENT SHOULD ALSO BE TAKEN INTO CONSIDERATION.
