JUSTIFICATION OF U-TURNS AT FREEWAY INTERCHANGES
THE IMPROVEMENT TO TRAFFIC SERVICE RESULTING FROM THE INSTALLATION OF U-TURN LANES BETWEEN FRONTAGE ROADS AT A DIAMOND INTERCHANGE WAS INVESTIGATED. FIELD STUDIES WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE VEHICULAR DELAY USING A BEFORE AND AFTER STUDY AND COMPARISON OF SEVERAL EXISTING INSTALLATIONS. DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS WHICH WOULD PROVIDE THE CAPABILITY OF ADDING SUCH LANES ON A STAGE CONSTRUCTION BASIS ARE DISCUSSED. THE RESEARCH INDICATES THE NEED FOR A COMPREHENSIVE ANALYSIS OF THE SIGNALIZATION OF THESE INTERCHANGES TO PROVIDE FOR MAXIMUM UTILIZATION OF EXISTING CAPACITY. /BPR/
