PROJECT SUNLINER
THE POPULATION OF FLORIDA CONTAINS A HIGH PERCENTAGE OF THE ELDERLY, MANY OF WHOM HAVE NO MEANS OTHER THAN PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION OF REACHING DESTINATIONS FOR MEDICAL, SOCIAL, AND OTHER PURPOSES. ON THE OTHER HAND, PRESENT PRODUCTION BUSES GIVE NO CONSIDERATION IN THEIR DESIGN TO PHYSICAL IMPAIRMENTS OF THE ELDERLY AND OTHERS THAT MAKE IT PAINFUL, DIFFICULT, OR IMPOSSIBLE FOR THEM TO BOARD THE TYPICAL VEHICLE WITH ITS HIGH STEPS AND NARROW DOOR FRAME. ACCORDINGLY, THE FLORIDA DOT HAS UNDERTAKEN TO DESIGN A BUS THAT MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE ELDERLY AND THE HANDICAPPED. DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS ARE DESCRIBED IN THE TEXT AND IN SEVERAL 1:16-SCALE DRAWINGS.
