CHLORIDE AND WATER PERMEABILITY OF AUTOMOTIVE BRAKE HOSE
THE OBJECT OF THIS STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE CHLORIDE AND WATER PERMEABILITY OF HYDRAULIC BRAKE HOSES. PERMEABILITY PARAMETERS MEASURED WERE TIME INTERVAL, TEMPERATURE, TYPE OF EXPOSURE, TYPE OF BRAKE HOSE COMPOSITION, TYPE OF BRAKE FLUID AND THE CATION LINKED WITH THE CHLORIDE ION. IT WAS FOUND THAT SUFFICIENT CHLORIDE AND WATER WILL PERMEATE BRAKE HOSES TO INITIATE CORROSION OF METAL PARTS IN THE CONVENTIONAL BRAKE SYSTEM. THE EXTENT OF PERMEABILITY IS GREATLY REDUCED IN SYSTEMS CONTAINING SILICONE FLUIDS. /AUTHOR/
