All Jacked Up: Innovative Bridge Construction Speeds Up Missouri Highway Project

This article describes an innovative project to replace the steel girders and concrete deck of the 670- ft. bridge over the Gasconade River in Missouri, part of the westbound lane of I-44. Emery Sap & Sons (ESS) offered the Missouri Department of Transportation a bridge replacement plan that would close the bridge lane for only 19 days, less than a third of the time MoDOT had assumed in its RFP. The innovative "bridge jacking" technique involved the use of several hydraulic jacks to carefully slide the superstructure into place over an 11-hour timeframe. The successful project was honored with the "Best Renovation of a Highway and Transportation Project" in March, 2012.
