INVESTIGATION OF THE BEHAVIOR OF THE VEHICLE/DRIVER SYSTEM IN SIDE-WINDS
THE BEHAVIOR OF THE DRIVER/VEHICLE CONTROL SYSTEM UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF SIDE-WINDS IS FIRST EXAMINED THEORETICALLY. PERHAPS THE MOST DIFFICULT PROBLEM IS TO DETERMINE WHAT INFORMATION THE DRIVER USES, AND TO WHAT EXTENT, IN TAKING CORRECTIVE ACTION. DESPITE THE VARIABILITY OF HUMAN RESPONSE TO OPTICAL AND MECHANICAL INFORMATION, THE MANUAL REACTION OF THE DRIVER CAN BE DESCRIBED MATHEMATICALLY BY FREQUENCY RESPONSES TO YAW ANGLE, LATERAL TRACK DEVIATION AT THE SIGHT POINT AND ATTITUDE- ANGLE VELOCITY. IN ORDER TO PERMIT A DIRECT COMPARISON BETWEEN THEORETICAL AND MEASURED BEHAVIOR OF THE DRIVER/ VEHICLE SYSTEM, THE FREQUENCY RESPONSES ARE CONVERTED INTO LINEAR APPROXIMATION EQUATIONS. A MATHMATICAL MODEL OF THE CONTROL LOOP IS CONSTRUCTED FROM THESE AND THE EQUATIONS OF MOTION OF THE VEHICLE. IN THE EXPERIMENTAL PART OF THE INVESTIGATION, THE SIDE-WIND EFFECT WAS SIMULATED BY THE EJECTION OF COMPRESSED AIR FROM A NOZZLE ON THE VEHICLE ITSELF. THE VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN ON AN AIRFIELD RUN-WAY AT APPROX. 100 KM./HR. LATERAL ACCELERATION, STEERING-WHEEL TORQUE, VEHICLE SPEED, ETC., WERE RECORDED. THE DRIVER'S REATION TO THE SIDE-WIND CAN BE EVALUATED ACCORDING TO THE EXTENT TO WHICH THE VEHICLE TRACK REMAINS WITHIN AN AREA OF TOLERANCE ON EITHER SIDE OF THE DESIRED TRACK. /AUTHOR/
