A STUDY OF METHODOLOGICAL AND PSYCHO-SOCIAL VARIABLES IN ACCIDENT RESEARCH

ABOUT 2,800 LICENSE APPLICANTS WERE ADMINISTERED A BIOGRAPHICAL FORM AND THE MCGUIRE SAFE DRIVER SCALE; A TWO YEAR FOLLOW-UP ELICITED SUBSEQUENT DRIVING EXPERIENCE. THIS EXPERIENCE WAS RELATED TO EACH SUBJECT'S BACKGROUND, DRIVING HABITS, PREDICTABILITY FOR ACCIDENTS, AND CERTAIN ASPECTS OF PERSONALITY. IN ADDITION, A PRESENTATION IS MADE OF VARIOUS PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY, ATTEMPTS MADE TO DEAL WITH THEM, AND IMPLICATIONS FOR ACCIDENT RESEARCH. THE RESULTS ARE REPORTED UNDER THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS: OFFICIAL RECORDS AS SOURCES OF DATA; STATISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS; THE MEASUREMENT OF EXPOSURE; DRIVING HABITS OF THE POPULATION; THE PREDICTION OF ACCIDENTS; THE RELATIONSHIP OF AGE AND SEX TO ACCIDENT FREQUENCY; THE ROLE OF MILEAGE IN THE PRODUCTION OF ACCIDENTS; THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CITATIONS AND ACCIDENTS; THE EFFECT OF UNCONTROLLED VARIABLES IN STUDIES OF DRIVER EDUCATION; AND PERSONALITY VARIABLES RELATED TO SAFE DRIVING.
