LITERATURE REVIEW AND BIBLIOGRAPHY OF RESEARCH AND PRACTICE IN PEDESTRIAN SAFETY

THE STATISTICAL ANALYSES OF ACCIDENT VICTIMS CONCENTRATE ON THREE GROUPS--YOUNG (SCHOOL) CHILDREN, ELDERLY ADULTS, AND MIDDLE-AGED ADULTS UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL. PROBABLE FACTORS CONTRIBUTING TO ACCIDENTS IN THESE GROUPS ARE DISCUSSED. ARTICLES ON THE PEDESTRIAN HAZARDS ASSOCIATED WITH NIGHT AND WINTER DRIVING AND OTHER ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS ARE ALSO DISCUSSED. DEVICES FOR ACCIDENT PREVENTION APPLICABLE TO SPECIFIC GROUPS OF PEDESTRIANS ARE DESCRIBED, AS ARE MORE GENERAL METHODS, SUCH AS TOWN SAFETY CAMPAIGNS, TOWN ENGINEERING PLANS, AND INTERSECTION CONTROL. THE QUESTION OF WHERE TO PLACE THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCIDENTS COMES UP CONSTANTLY AND IS DISCUSSED FROM VARIOUS POINTS OF VIEW. THERE IS A NEED FOR MORE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF THE FINDINGS OF THIS RESEARCH. THERE IS ALSO A NEED FOR RESEARCH LEADING TO A TOTAL CITY PLAN INSTEAD OF "PATCHWORK READJUSTMENT." SUCH A PLAN WOULD CONSIDER THE INTERESTS OF BOTH THE DRIVER AND THE PEDESTRIAN FROM SEVERAL DIFFERENT ASPECTS, AS THOSE OF SAFETY, PRACTICALITY, AND AESTHETICS. /SRIS/
