DATA ABOUT SCHOOL-AGE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS ON STATE HIGHWAYS
THIS STUDY IS BASED ON A 12 YEAR RECORD OF ACCIDENT EXPERIENCE FOR SCHOOL YEARS 1958 THROUGH 1969. THE SUMMARY RECORDS INCLUDE DATA ON ACCIDENT LOCATION, PERSONS AT FAULT, FATAL AND NON-FATAL INJURY, AGE AND SEX, TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICES, WEATHER AND TIME OF ACCIDENT. THE SPECIFIC FINDINGS ARE AS FOLLOWS: LESS THAN 20% OF ALL REPORTED ACCIDENTS INVOLVING SCHOOL-AGE PEDESTRIANS GOING TO AND FROM SCHOOL OCCUR ON THE STATE HIGHWAY SYSTEM. THE YEARLY AVERAGE IS ABOUT 29 ACCIDENTS. MOST OF THE ACCIDENTS TAKE PLACE ALONG ROUTES WHICH PUPILS TAKE TO AND FROM SCHOOL. APPROXIMATELY 40% TAKE PLACE AT NONINTERSECTION LOCATIONS WHERE PEDESTRIAN CROSSING IS NOT AUTHORIZED. MORE ACCIDENTS OCCUR WITHIN A FEW BLOCKS OF THE PUPIL'S HOME THAN AT ESTABLISHED SCHOOL CROSSINGS. RIGHT OF WAY AND SIGNAL VIOLATIONS BY SCHOOL-AGE PEDESTRIANS ARE MORE THAN TWICE AS HIGH AS THOSE BY DRIVERS. IN THESE VIOLATIONS, IT IS NOTED THAT CHILDREN RUNNING INTO THE ROADWAY FROM BETWEEN PARKED CARS ACCOUNT FOR A SIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF THE ACCIDENTS. ALMOST ALL OF THE PUPILS SUFFER SOME DEGREE OF INJURY, WHILE 1/3 WERE SERIOUSLY INJURED. THREE OUT OF FIVE OF THE PUPILS INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENTS ARE BELOW THE TEENAGE LEVEL. THE 6-9 YEAR OLD CATEGORY IS THE MOST CONSPICUOUS. MORE BOYS (ABOUT 65%) WERE INVOLVED IN THE ACCIDENTS THAN GIRLS. SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS ARE THE SCENE OF ABOUT ONE OUT OF EVERY THREE SCHOOL-AGE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS. ABOUT 15% OF THE SCHOOL-AGE PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS OCCUR WHEN ROADS ARE ICY, SNOWY, OR WET. /SRIS/
