DRIVER BEHAVIOR
A COMPREHENSIVE SUMMARY IS MADE OF PAST RESEARCH ON DRIVER BEHAVIOR IN THREE PARTS: (1) A GENERAL VIEW ON THE USEFULNESS OF BEHAVIORAL RESEARCH TO TRAFFIC AND ROAD SAFETY PROGRAMS, (2) A REVIEW OF OBSERVATION TECHNIQUES, DRIVER SELECTION PROCEDURES, DRIVER TRAINING AND RETRAINING, AND (3) CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS. IN THE SECOND PART, A REVIEW OF STUDIES THROUGH OBSERVATION ANALYSIS IS GIVEN, AND STUDIES WHERE DRIVER BEHAVIOR IS MEASURED BY ELECTRO- MECHANICAL MEANS ARE DISCUSSED. THE RELATION BETWEEN AUTONOMOUS REACTIONS AND DRIVER BEHAVIOR AND THE STUDIES THROUGH OBSERVATIONS AND MEASUREMENTS FROM OUTSIDE THE VEHICLE ARE EVALUATED. CLASSIFICATION IS MADE OF DRIVERS BASED ON OBSERVATION OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR ON PERSONALITY AND PERFORMANCE TESTS. OTHER CLASSIFICATION METHODS BASED ON ACCIDENTS, NEAR ACCIDENTS AND TRAFFIC OFFENCES ARE DISCUSSED. DRIVER TRAINING METHODS AND THEIR EFFECTIVENESS, NEW TECHNIQUES INCLUDING SIMULATOR USE, RETRAINING INCLUDING IMPROVEMENT OF DRIVER BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES ARE ALL DISCUSSED. FINALLY, THREE PROJECTS DEALING WITH IMPROVING DRIVER TRAINING AND EXAMINATION, AND DEVELOPING IMPROVED METHODS FOR DRIVER SELECTION ARE PROPOSED. /IRRD/
