CONTROL TECHNIQUES FOR CARBON MONOXIDE, NITROGEN OXIDE, AND HYDROCARBON EMISSIONS FROM MOBILE SOURCES
TECHNIQUES FOR THE CONTROL AND PREVENTION OF THE EMISSION OF CARBON MONOXIDE, NITROGEN OXIDES, AND HYDROCARBONS FROM ALL TYPES OF VEHICLES ARE CONSIDERED. EMISSIONS FROM A GASOLINE-POWERED VEHICLE WITHOUT ANY EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS ORIGINATE FROM THE FUEL TANK, CARBURETOR, CRANKCASE, AND ENGINE EXHAUST. THE EXHAUST IS THE SOURCE OF ALMOST ALL CARBON MONOXIDE AND NITROGEN OXIDES AND MORE THAN HALF OF THE HYDROCARBONS. THE CLEAN AIR ACT, AS AMENDED, IS THE LEGISLATIVE BASIS FOR THE FEDERAL AIR POLLUTION CONTROL PROGRAM FOR NEW MOTOR VEHICLES. SINCE FEDERAL AUTHORITY FOR THE CONTROL OF VEHICULAR EMISSIONS ENDS WITH THE SALE OF NEW VEHICLES, STATES SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO TAKE ACTION TO ENSURE THE CONTINUED OPERATION AND EFFICIENCY OF EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEMS AND OTHER AUTOMOTIVE SYSTEMS THAT AFFECT EMISSIONS. /AUTHOR/
