DESIGNING FOR PEDESTRIANS

A SERIES OF LEVEL OF SERVICE DESIGN STANDARDS WERE DEVELOPED FOR PEDESTRIANS BASED ON A QUALITATIVE AND QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF THE USE OF WALKWAYS, STAIRWAYS, MOTORSTAIRS, MOVING WALKS AND QUEUING AREAS. QUEUING STANDARDS ARE BASED ON A SYNTHESIS OF DIFFERENT LEVELS OF HUMAN AREA OCCUPANCY AND AN EVALUATION OF CIRCULATION CAPABILITIES WITHIN THE QUEUE AND PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS WHERE APPLICABLE. WALKWAY AND STAIRWAY STANDARDS ARE BASED ON TIME LAPSE PHOTOGRAPHY STUDIES OF FLOW RELATIONSHIP AT DIFFERENENT LEVELS OF HUMAN AREA OCCUPANCY COMBINED WITH AN EVALUATION OF PEDESTRIAN CONVENIENCE AT THE VARIOUS TRAFFIC CONCENTRATIONS. ALTHOUGH NO DEFINITIVE STANDARDS FOR MOTORSTAIRS AND MOVING WALKS ARE DEVELOPED, THE SLOW MOTION PHOTOGRAPHY OF ALMOST 800 PEDESTRIANS BOARDING MOTORSTAIRS AND THE SUBSEQUENT USE OF THIS DATA IN A COMPUTER SIMULATION OF MOTORSTAIR UTILIZATION PROVIDES A METHOD OF DETERMINING THE ACTUAL USE OF THESE UNITS UNDER VARIABLE TRAFFIC PATTERNS AND TRAFFIC COMPOSITIONS. /AUTHOR/
