ADISCUSSION OF THE EFFECT ON URBAN TRAFFIC OF DISPARTIIES IN VEHICLE PERFORMANCE CAPABILITY - PUBLISHED AS APPENDIX I TO BI-MODAL URBAN TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM STUDY
THE EFFECT OF A MIXTURE OF ELECTRICALLY POWERED AND CONVENTIONAL VEHICLES ON TRAFFIC HAZARDS AND THE EFFECT OF VEHICLE PERFORMANCE DISPARITIES ON TRAFFIC OPERATIONS ARE EXAMINED. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT AN INCREASED RANGE IN PERFORMANCE CAPABILITIES OF THE VEHICLES IN THE TRAFFIC STREAM SHOULD INCREASE THE OPPORTUNITY FOR RANDOM SPEED VARIATIONS, THUS INCREASING ACCIDENT RISKS. A LOW-PERFOR- MANCE ELECTRIC CAR MAY OR MAY NOT HAVE A DELETERIOUS EFFECT ON URBAN TRAFFIC MOVEMENT, BUT SHOULD REDUCE THE AMOUNT OF TRANSPORTATION THAT CAN BE DEVELOPED ON AN URBAN FREEWAY IF THERE IS ANY APPRECIABLE NUMBER OF STANDARD-SIZE VEHICLES IN THE STREAM. /HSL/
