AN ASSESSMENT OF THE DUNLOP ELECTRONIC MAXARET ANTI-LOCKING BRAKING SYSTEM FITTED TO AN ARTICULATED VEHICLE
THE RESULTS OBTAINED ARE DESCRIBED WHEN THE REAR BRAKES OF THE TRACTOR UNIT OF AN ARTICULATED VEHICLE WERE FITTED WITH THE DUNLOP MAXARET MARK IIE ANTI-LOCKING BRAKING SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM USED ELECTRONIC WHEEL LOCK DETECTION WITH THE SENSOR UNIT DRIVEN BY THE PROPELLER SHAFT. TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A RANGE OF SURFACES, WITH DIFFERENT VEHICLE LOADING CONDITIONS. WITH THE ANTI-LOCKING BRAKING SYSTEM IN USE, JACK-KNIFING DID NOT OCCUR AT ALL. THE SYSTEM DID NOT MAKE A GREAT DIFFERENCE TO THE BRAKING DISTANCES OBTAINED, THESE BEING IN GENERAL, SLIGHTLY INCREASED ON GOOD SURFACES BUT REDUCED ON SLIPPERY ONES. THE USE OF ELECTRONIC MEANS OF SENSING WHEEL LOOKING, AS COMPARED WITH THE EARLIER INERTIA TYPE, OFFERS GREATER FLEXIBILITY OF INSTALLATION. /AUTHOR/
