THE BREAKDOWN OF PERIODIC MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION
IT IS DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE WHETHER MOTOR VEHICLE INSPECTION AND ACCIDENT RATES CAN BE SHOWN TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP. A GENERALIZED MATHEMATICAL MODEL IS DESCRIBED WHICH CONSIDERS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF INSPECTION SYSTEMS, AS MEASURED BY THE NUMBER OF FAULTY VEHICLES ON THE ROAD, AS A FUNCTION OF THE EXPECTED LIFETIME OF A COMPONENT, THE EXPECTED TIME FOR THE OWNER TO DETECT AND REPAIR A FAULT, AND THE KIND OF INSPECTION SYSTEM. THE PRINCIPAL APPROACH IS IN ESTIMATING A LIFE CYCLE FOR THE GIVEN COMPONENT. THE TOOL WOULD PERMIT SYSTEM DESIGNERS TO PREDICT THE LEVEL OF EFFECTIVENESS THEY WILL ACHIEVE WITH VARIOUS INSPECTION ALTERNATIVES. /HSL/
