FUEL TANK PROTECTION: AN INVESTIGATION OF FUEL, EXHAUST AND ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS AS RELATED TO POST CRASH FIRE SAFETY
THE PURPOSE WAS TO AID IN ESTABLISHING PERFORMANCE STANDARDS FOR THE PREVENTION OF POST-CRASH FIRES. THE DESIGN FEATURES OF FUEL SYSTEMS WERE ANALYZED FOR DOMESTIC AND FOREIGN PASSENGER CARS, TRUCKS, AND MOTORCYCLES. IT WAS CONCLUDED THAT THE PRINCIPAL CAUSE OF POST-CRASH FIRE IS GENERATION OF VAPOR BY UNCONFINED FUEL AND THAT THE FUEL SYSTEM ITSELF MAY BE DIRECTLY DISRUPTED WITH RESULTANT FREE FLAMMABLE VAPOR. THE DESIGN FEATURES OF VARIOUS VEHICLE MODELS ARE DESCRIBED AND RELATED TO FIRE HAZARDS. /HSL/
