RUNNING LIGHTS RESEARCH PROJECT (TES-11). FINAL REPORT

THE MODIFICATION OF VEHICLES TO PROVIDE 'RUNNING LIGHTS' IS SUCCESSFUL IN REDUCING ACCIDENT OCCURENCE, PARTICULARLY (WITH THE CURRENT AMBER 'PARKING' LIGHTS) ON DARK-COLORED VEHICLES. SINCE THE VEHICLE INVOLVED IN THIS TEST INCLUDED AN INSIGNIFICANT NUMBER OF THE 1968 MODELS WITH THE NEW 'WRAP-AROUND' OR SIDE-MOUNTED PARKING LIGHTS, THE MOST SIGNIFICANT EFFECT OF THE USE OF PARKING LIGHTS AS RUNNING LIGHTS MUST BE MAINLY IN HEAD-ON AND REAR-END ACCIDENTS. THEIR LIMITED VISIBILITY WHEN BESIDE A VEHICLE WOULD PRECLUDE THEIR HELP IN THE CASE OF SIDE-SWIPE ACCIDENTS. THIS IS BORNE OUT IN THE RESULTS. /HSL/
