ALCOHOL SAFETY
THIS REPORT IS THE RESULT OF INVESTIGATIONS CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH DRINKING AND DRIVING PROBLEMS INVOLVE ALCOHOLICS AND OTHER ABNORMAL DRINKERS AND TO ATTEMPT TO ACCURATELY CHARACTERIZE AND IDENTIFY DRINKING DRIVERS BEFORE THEY BECOME INVOLVED IN SERIOUS ACCIDENTS. THE CHARACTERIZATION OF DRINKING DRIVERS NECESSITATED THE GATHERING OF EMPIRICAL DATA. THREE POPULATIONS WERE SELECTED FOR THIS PURPOSE (1) TRAFFIC FATALITIES, WHOSE ALCOHOL INVOLMENT WAS DETERMINED THROUGH A RETROSPECTIVE, CASE-HISTORY INVESTIGATION, (2) KNOWN ALCOHOLICS, WHOSE CRASH AND VIOLATION INVOLVEMENT WAS INITIALLY IDENTIFIED THROUGH A PROSPECTIVE, LONGTUDINAL STUDY, AND (3) ARRESTED DRINKING DRIVERS, WHO WERE INVESTIGATED IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THOSE CHARACTERISTICS COMMON TO THE OTHER GROUPS. SPECIFIC MEANS FOR IDENTIFYING ALCOHOLICS WERE UNDERTAKEN BY USE OF THE MICHIGAN ALCOHOLIC SCREENING TEST (MAST) ANALYSIS, AND THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST DEVELOPMENT FOR ALSOHOLIC DRIVERS. THE MAST WAS DEVELOPED WITH A BRIEF QUESTIONNAIRE THAT CAN BE USED IN A STRUCTURED INTERVIEW TO IDENTIFY PERSONS WITH POSSIBLE DRINKING PROBLEMS. THE PSYCHOLOGICAL TEST DEVELOPMENT FOR ALCOHOLIC DRIVERS WAS THE COMPLILATION OF 500 TEST QUESTIONS FROM AN EXTENSIVE SEARCH OF OTHER QUESTIONNAIRES THAT WERE PREVIOUSLY FOUND USEFUL IN SELECTING ALCOHOLICS FROM A GENERAL POPULATION. /AUTHOR/
