NEW AREAS FOR THE PERFORMANCE METHODS

THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TIRES ARE IDENTIFIED AS ONE OF THE TWO MAJOR ASPECTS OF TIRE PERFORMANCE THAT ARE OF CONCERN TO THE VEHICLE DESIGNER. PREVIOUS STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT RELATIONSHIPS AMONG TIRE COMPLIANCE, INTERFACIAL SHEAR FORCE, AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TIRE-ROAD INTERFACE ARE FUNDAMENTAL TO THE VEHICLE CONTROL AND GUIDANCE PROCESS. ACCORDINGLY, AN ATTEMPT IS MADE TO IDENTIFY THE REQUIREMENT FOR MEASURING THE COMBINED CORNERING AND BRAKING PERFORMANCE OF TIRES IN THE NEAR-SKID REGIME AS DETERMINED BY THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SURFACE SUPPORTING THE TIRE, IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL CONSIDERATION OF THE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TIRE AND ITS OPERATING VARIABLES. WITHIN THIS BACKGROUND, THE PAPER REVIEWS AND DISCUSSES BOTH THE STATE OF KNOWLEDGE AND THE ART OF MEASUREMENT RELATIVE TO THE VARIABLES THAT (1) DESCRIBE THE OPERATING ENVIRONMENT FOR THE TIRE AND (2) EXERCISE MAJOR INFLUENCE ON THE MICRO AND DYNAMIC ASPECTS OF THE SHEAR FORCES ACTING WITHIN THE TIRE CONTACT PRINT. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THERE IS A PRESSING NEED TO ADOPT SECONDARY, OR INDIRECT, MEASURES OF THE INTERFACIAL VARIABLES UNTIL FURTHER RESEARCH PROVIDES A MORE DEFINITE UNDERSTANDING OF THE FUNDAMENTAL INTERFACE VARIABLES AND ESTABLISHES PRACTICAL MEANS FOR THEIR MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL. /AUTHOR/
