LABORATORY-SCALE MODEL EXPERIMENTS TO INVESTIGATE AIRCRAFT TIRE HYDRO-PLANING
AN EXPLORATORY TEST PROGRAM WAS CONDUCTED TO EVALUATE NEW EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES DEVELOPED FOR THE STUDY OF PNEUMATIC TIRE HYDROPLANING THROUGH SCALE MODEL LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS. HYDROPLANING INCEPTION SPEED MEASUREMENTS WERE MADE FOR A SERIES OF TREADLESS RECTANGULAR CROSS-SECTION TIRES AT VARIOUS LOADS AND WATER DEPTHS. THE RESULTS, ALTHOUGH CHARACTERIZED BY APPARENT INACCURACIES ASSOCIATED WITH THE MEASUREMENT AND CONTROL OF WATER CONDITIONS ON THE TREADMILL TYPE RUNWAY SIMULATOR, DEMONSTRATE THE BASIC PROMISE OF THE TECHNIQUES AND EQUIPMENT EMPLOYED, AND SUGGEST CONTINUED WORK WITH THEM. THE DATA HAVE BEEN ANALYZED ON THE BASIS OF DIMENSIONAL ANALYSIS TECHNIQUES TO DRAW SOME TENTATIVE CONCLUSIONS CONCERNING THE INFLUENCE ON HYDROPLANING INCEPTION SPEED OF VARIOUS CRITICAL TIRE LOADING AND GEOMETRY PARAMETERS. THESE ARE COMPARED WITH PREVIOUS RESULTS OBTAINED IN FULL SCALE AIRCRAFT BOGIE AND NOSE-GEAR TESTS. /AUTHOR/
