TIRE FRICTION ON WATER-LUBRICATED ROADS
ADVANCING TECHNOLOGY HAS BROUGHT US TO THE POINT WHERE EVERY ASPECT OF THE PHENOMENA ASSOCIATED WITH RUBBING SURFACES MUST BE CONSIDERED AND INVESTIGATED APPROPRIATELY- THUS BRINGING US TO A NEW DISCIPLINE - TRIBOLOGY. THIS ARTICLE SURVEYS RESEARCH DONE ON ONE ASPECT OF THE TRIBOLOGICAL PROBLEM, AND SUGGESTS THAT AN INVESTIGATION OF TIRE FRICTION ON WET ROADS WOULD FALL NATURALLY INTO THREE PHASES: ATTENTION SHOULD BE FOCUSED ON HOW WELL RUBBER CONFORMS TO ASPERITIES SUCH AS THOSE FOUND ON ROADWAY SURFACES, A STUDY SHOULD BE MADE OF THE THICKNESS OF THE WATER FILM THAT MAY PERSIST ON THE TOPS OF SUCH ASPERITIES DURING PASSAGE OF A TIRE, AND THE RELATIONSHIPS OF THESE TWO FACTORS TO ROAD/TIRE FRICTION SHOULD BE DETERMINED. /AUTHOR/
