THE EFFECTS OF SELECTED NONPRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS ON SPECIFIC PSYCHOPHYSICAL DRIVING SKILLS
THE PURPOSE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO EXPERIMENTALLY DETERMINE THE EFFECTS, IF ANY, OF SELECTED NONPRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS ON PSYCHOPHYSICAL DRIVING SKILLS. THE NONPRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS THAT WERE USED IN THIS STUDY INCLUDED ALVA-TANQUIL, EMPIRIN, DRISTAN, WYAMINE INHALER, EXEDRIN, BROMO SELTZER, ASTHAMODOR CIGARETTES, MEDIHALER EPI, SOMINEX, COSAYNL, AND DONNAGEL. THESE DRUGS WERE SELECTED ON THE ADVISE OF A PHARMACOLOGIST AND PEDIATRICIAN. AN EQUAL NUMBER OF PLACEBOS WERE PREPARED TO SERVE AS CONTROLS. THE NONPRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS WERE ADMINISTERED IN MAXIMUM NORMAL DOSES TO EIGHTEEN SUBJECTS. EACH SUBJECT'S SKILL PERFORMANCE WAS MEASURED BY MEANS OF NEW DRIVING APPARATUS DESIGNED TO TEST THE PSYCHOPHSICAL SKILLS OF INDIVIDUALS. THESE PSYCHOPHYSICAL SKILLS TESTED WERE REACTION TIME, DEPTH PERCEPTION. VISUAL ACUITY, PERIPHERAL VISION, GLARE RECOVERY, STEADINESS AND COLOR VISION. ON EACH TESTING DAY THE SUBJECTS WERE GIVEN A NON- PRESCRIPTIVE DRUG OR A PLACEBO, THEN WERE REQUIRED TO WAIT THIRTY MINUTES BEFORE BEING TESTED. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY INDICATED THAT THE NONPRESCRIPTIVE DRUGS SELECTED FOR THIS EXPERIMENT HAD NO SIGNIFICANT EFFECT ON SPECIFIC PSYCHOPHYSICAL DRIVING SKILLS AS MEASURED IN THIS EXPERIMENT. /AUTHOR/
