FRACTURE MECHANICS. AN ALTERNATIVE APPROACH
This paper reports on the development of an expanded approach to linear elastic fracture mechanics that would maintain a chosen fracture criterion and the possible stress-strain states which may satisfy it while also allowing for the occurrence of crack initiation, stable crack propagation and unstable crack propagation. The specific question considered is that of estimating the residual strength of a cracked sheet of arbitrary thickness, which fractures before general yielding has occurred.
