AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PROBLEMS AND OPINIONS OF AGED DRIVERS

THIS REPORT ATTEMPTS TO REFERENCE SPECIFICALLY THOSE FACTS THAT ARE KNOWN ABOUT THE AGED DRIVER AND TO UPDATE THE GENERAL IMPLICATIONS OF RESEARCH ON THE AGED. IT CONTAINS AN UP-TO-DATE REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE CONCERNING THE AGED DRIVER POPULATION AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE AGED AND THE AGING PROCESS RELATED TO DRIVING. AN ANALYSIS OF QUESTIONNAIRE RESULTS COVERING FACTS ABOUT THE AGED DRIVER, HIS DRIVING EXPERIENCE, OPINIONS ON VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE DRIVING TASK AND KNOWLEDGE OF RULES OF THE ROAD IS PRESENTED. A PROFILE OF AGED DRIVER PROBLEMS DERIVED FROM AN ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RECORDS AND RESPONSES TO QUESTIONNAIRE ITEMS IS GIVEN. A DESCRIPTION OF SOME EFFORTS TO EDUCATE THE AGED DRIVER GROUP AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TRAINING THIS GROUP IN DEFENSIVE DRIVING IS INCLUDED.
