NATURAL RUBBER IN WINTER TIRES AND INDUSTRIAL TIRES
INVESTIGATIONS WERE CONDUCTED INTO THE PROPERTIES AND PERFORMANCE OF TIRE TREADS BASED ON NATURAL RUBBER, OIL-EXTENDED NATURAL RUBBER (OENR), OESBR, AND THOSE OF INDUSTRIAL TIRES. LABORATORY MEASUREMENTS OF THE SKID COEFFICIENT WERE MADE OVER A RANGE OF THE SKID TEMPERATURES BETWEEN + 20 DEGREES C AND -20 DEGREES C AND TIRE TRIALS WERE CARRIED OUT IN WINTER IN SWEDEN. RESULTS SHOW THAT TIRE TREADS MADE FROM NATURAL RUBBER NOT EXTENDED BY OIL HAVE THE BEST WEAR AND SKID RESISTANCE AT CONTINUALLY SUB-ZERO TEMPERATURES. IF WINTER TIRES ARE REQUIRED TO OPERATE OVER WET ROADS AS WELL AS ICE, OIL-EXTENDED NATURAL RUBBER BLENDED WITH BR GIVES TIRE TREADS GOOD WEAR, GROOVE CRACKING RESISTANCE AND GOOD WET SKID RESISTANCE. STUDS INCREASE SKID RESISTANCE ON FROZEN SURFACES BUT LOWER IT ON WET SURFACES. FOR INDUSTRIAL TIRES, NATURAL RUBBER OFFERS A COMBINATION OF GOOD WEAR, TEAR RESISTANCE AND LOW ROLLING RESISTANCE. /RRL/
