CHILDREN IN TRAFFIC /IN GERMAN/
OBSERVATIONS MADE OF THE BEHAVIOR OF UNACCOMPANIED CHILDREN AGED UP TO EIGHT YEARS, AND ON MEDICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL EXAMINATIONS CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE VISUAL AND AURAL ACUITY, VOCABULARY AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND INSTRUCTION GIVEN ARE REPORTED. RESULTS SHOW THAT (1) YOUNG CHILDREN FIND IT DIFFICULT TO DISTINGUISH BETWEEN RIGHT AND LEFT, AND THEREFORE TO LEARN CURB DRILL; CHILDREN AT PLAY ARE TOO ABSORBED IN THEIR ACTIVITY TO THINK OF TRAFFIC RULES; (3) BOYS ARE BETTER INFORMED ON TRAFFIC MATTERS THAN GIRLS, BUT HAVE THE WORSE BEHAVIOUR. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT CHILDREN UP TO THE AGE OF EIGHT YEARS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE IN TRAFFIC, DESPITE INTENSIVE EDUCATION. /BAST/RRL/
