SIDEFORCE AND SLIP IN THE TYRE CONTACT PATCH
ONE ASPECT OF THE CORNERING PROPERTIES OF TIRES IS DISCUSSED. THIS ASPECT IS THE MECHANISM OF ROLLING AT A SLIP ANGLE AND THE FACTORS INFLUENCING THIS MECHANISM. A SPECIAL RIG IS USED TO STUDY THE PHENOMENON WHICH MEASURES THE INTENSITY OF SIDEFORCE AND THE AMOUNT OF SIDESLIP AT ANY POSITION BETWEEN THE POINTS OF ENTRY AND OF EXIT OF THE TIRE TREAD IN THE CONTACT PATCH, WHILE THE TIRE ROLLS AT A KNOWN SLIP ANGLE. FROM THE RESULTS OBTAINED ON THE RIG, IT IS POSSIBLE TO DEDUCE THE FOLLOWING: (1) TOTAL CORNERING FORCE, (2) SELF ALIGNING TORQUE, (3) PNEUMATIC TRAIL, (4) SIDEWAY DEFLECTION OF THE TREAD IN THE CONTACT PATCH, (5) THE LAWS OF ROLLING FRICTION, AND (6) WORK DONE AGAINST SIDEWAY FRICTIONAL FORCES OBTAINED BY INTEGRATING THE LATERAL FORCE INTENSITY WITH RESPECT TO THE SIDEWAYS MOVEMENT IN THE CONTACT PATCH. A FIGURE OF MERIT WAS DEVELOPED WHICH IS A MEASURE OF HOW SMALL THE WORK IS THAT IS DONE AGAINST FRICTION WHEN A TIRE DEVELOPS A CERTAIN PREDETERMINED CORNERING FORCE. THIS FIGURE OF MERIT IS SHOWN TO BE RELATED TO THE QUARTER WAVELENGTH OF THE TIRE CONSIDERED AS AN ELASTIC BEAM ON AN ELASTIC FOUNDATION. A METHOD IS DESCRIBED FOR DETERMINING THE TREAD AND CASING LATERAL STIFFNESS AND FOR ESTIMATING THE QUARTER WAVELENGTH.
