THE WEARING EFFECT OF STUDDED TIRES ON CERTAIN ASPHALT PAVEMENTS
THE INCREASING USE OF STUDDED TIRES, COUPLED WITH BARE PAVEMENT WINTER MAINTENANCE HAS APPRECIABLY INCREASED THE WEAR ON ROAD SURFACES IN FINLAND. INVESTIGATIONS WERE UNDERTAKEN TO MEASURE THE WEAR ON DIFFERENT TYPES OF PAVEMENTS, TO COMPARE THE DAMAGE DONE BY DIFFERENT TYPES OF STUDS AND BY DIFFERENT TYPES OF VEHICLES. IT WAS FOUND THAT NEW PAVEMENTS WEAR QUICKLY AT FIRST, THE FINE GRADE AGGREGATE BEING LOST SOONER THAN THE COARSER STONES. THE RATE OF WEAR SLOWS DOWN AFTER THE INITIAL DAMAGE. CARS WEAR OUT THE AGGREGATES, TRUCKS BREAK IT. STONE FILLED SHEET ASPHALT HAS THE GREATEST RESISTANCE TO WEAR. OVERLAYS AND SLURRY SEALS WERE MORE QUICKLY WORN THAN PAVEMENTS. THE TYPE AND MATERIAL OF THE STUDS IS IMPORTANT.
