Choosing the Right Transport Police Model for Abu Dhabi
This article describes how the Abu Dhabi Department of Transport (DoT) evaluated and chose a model for its new transport police unit. The unit will protect Abu Dhabi’s rapidly-evolving transportation system. Although several models of transport policing exist, each offers benefits and drawbacks depending on the unique needs of the transport system. It was important to choose a model that delivered the best match with the DoT’s vision, mission and objectives. It was also important that the model could allow growth as the system expands. Three critical factors were considered when analyzing the models: transport system security; passenger perception of a safe and secure system; and efficient emergency response. After evaluating models, the DoT recommended a model that consisted of a transport police unit within the Abu Dhabi Police, supplemented by non-sworn, highly-trained private security officers.
