MECHANICAL FACTORS STUDY
AN INSPECTION TO DETERMINE MECHANICAL CONDITIONS WAS CONDUCTED ON 424 VEHICLES INVOLVED IN SINGLE VEHICLE FATAL TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS. MECHANICAL INSPECTIONS WERE PERFORMED BY EXPERIENCED MECHANICS. OF THE VEHICLES EXAMINED TWENTY-NINE PERCENT HAD ONE OR MORE PRECRASH MECHANICAL DEFECTS. THESE DEFECTS WERE CLASSIFIED ACCORDING TO THEIR SEVERITY AND RELATIONSHIP TO THE ACCIDENTS IN WHICH THE CARS AND DRIVERS WERE INVOLVED. IN THIS POPULATION OF SINGLE VEHICLE FATAL ACCIDENTS, ABOUT 6.4 PERCENT WERE CLASSIFIED AS HAVING BEEN CAUSED BY MECHANICAL FAILURE. /AUTHOR/
