THE TRANSLATION OF VISUAL INFORMATION INTO VEHICULAR CONTROL ACTIONS
EVIDENCE IS PRESENTED OF A FUNCTIONAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN ANGULAR VELOCITY AND THE DISTANCE AT WHICH DECELERATION BEGINS. THIS ANGULAR VELOCITY INFORMATION IS WEIGHED IN TERMS OF THE ABSOLUTE VELOCITY AT WHICH HE IS TRAVELLING. IT APPEARS THAT A SET OF EXPECTANCIES IS DEVELOPED AS TO HOW THE VISUAL WORLD BEHAVES SO THAT WHEN A CUE IS MANIPULATED THE WEIGHTING SYSTEM IS CHANGED. THE VISUAL INFORMATION AVAILABLE IS USED IN A SYSTEMATIC MANNER MAKING THE DERIVATION OF SIMPLE FUNCTIONAL DIFFICULT SINCE THE WEIGHTING GIVEN TO ANY SPECIFIC ITEM IS IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE OVERALL SITUATION IN WHICH HE IS OPERATING. /AUTHOR/
