HAZARD POTENTIAL OF LUMINAIRE SUPPORTS IN HIGHWAY MEDIAN IS EVALUATED
THE IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF MEDIAN-MOUNTED LUMINAIRE SUPPORTS, AND THE NATURE OF SECONDARY COLLISIONS OF VEHICLES STRIKING THEM WHEN THEY ARE DOWNED IN A TRAFFIC LANE, HAVE BEEN EVALUATED THROUGH RESEARCH INVOLVING CRASH TESTS. THESE FULL-SCALE CRASH TESTS WERE CONDUCTED TO DETERMINE THE IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF MEDIAN-MOUNTED SUPPORTS AND SECONDARY VEHICLE DOWNED POLE CONDITIONS. A RELATIVE HAZARD CREATED BY THE PROXIMITY AND FREQUENCY OF LUMINAIRE SUPPORTS. THE INDEX SUGGESTS THAT MEDIAN-MOUNTED LUMINAIRE SYSTEMS PRODUCE LESS HAZARD THAN HOUSE-SIDE SYSTEMS FOR MEDIAN WIDTHS OF 32 FEET OR GREATER.
