SURFACE IRREGULARITY AS A MEANS OF REDUCING VEHICLE SPEED

DESIGNED IRREGULARITY OF HIGHWAY SURFACES CAN BE USED TO RESTRICT VEHICLE SPEED IN A "NEW TOWN" PEDESTRIAN/ VEHICLE INTEGRATED ENVIRONMENT. THE METHOD DEVELOPED WAS A SYSTEM OF IMPOSING ON THE VEHICLE A VIBRATION OF 10-12 HERTZ AT SPEEDS ABOVE THE DESIRED LIMIT. THE TEST SURFACES COVERED APPROXIMATELY 110M, THREE WAVELENGTHS OF 375MM, 600MM, AND 100MM AND TWO AMPLITUDES OF 15MM AND 25MM. BANDS OF TAR WERE SPRAYED THE WIDTH OF EVERY WAVELENGTH-2", AND THE SPREADING OF CHIPPINGS WAS SYNCHRONIZED TO MEET THIS DISTRIBUTION. /DOT/
